Fascio
The Royal George SE8, 06/09/24 - 20/10/24
Above the horseshoe carousel of the Royal George are a series of works collectively named Substitutes for Bread’, they are Fasci hidden in plain sight; a historical symbol of power and subordination, masquerading as an enduring symbol of harvest offering. They have claimed the bar, in a way overseeing the public serving of measures.
Accompanied by a series of drawings, each framed in reclaimed wood from a single Basildon municipal bench (a remnant of the New Towns Act of 1946 National Policy) passing through a series of calisthenics; linguistic-muscular structures, bodily configurations, architectural vernacular or a folk calisthenics wherein bodies become things in an approximation to the historical.
